Impressive Newsletters to Help Make Money on the Internet

The main goal for web site business owners is to attract as many visitors to the site as they possibly can. There are many different ways that you can accomplish this important goal, with some techniques being much more effective and that will help you to make money on the Internet. As an online business owner, you need to devise a plan that will help you spread the reputation of your web site.

One of the most effective ways of increasing the number of people that know about your site is by sending out an email newsletter. The newsletter needs to be created in a very impressive manner so that more people will want to come and visit your web site. As you incorporate different techniques into the creation of your impressive newsletter, you will be able to make money on the Internet.

Unique And Special
A companys newsletter must be completely distinct and unique from anyone elses newsletter. If your newsletter stands out from all the others, then more people will remember it and will want to be a part of the company. If you think of all the newsletters that you have ever read, they are the ones that are appealing and extremely attractive to the eye.

Publication
Create newsletters that have the possibility of being published on other sites on the Internet. Millions of customers surf the Internet everyday and it is one of the most commonly used forms of media in todays society. If business owners can create newsletters that really stick out on a computer screen then people will spend more time looking at them and it will increase their desire to buy the products or services.

Keywords And Phrases
Using certain words or letters in the newsletters will also attract more people. Remember to use variety in your newsletter, because that is what people are looking for. Sometimes newsletters can be created to look exactly the same as others, but people like to look for new and exciting things. Using variety can make your newsletter much more interesting to see.

Graphic Designer
Artistic techniques can also make your companys newsletter very attractive to viewers. If you have to, hire a graphics designer or artist to put different designs and pictures on to the newsletter. This can help save you a lot of time and also help you to ultimately make money on the Internet.

Colors
Enhance the attractiveness of the newsletter by adding impressive colors. Colorful newsletters are one of the best ways to increase their visibility to the public. People definitely notice colorful newsletters and pay more attention to them.

White Space
The use of effective white space is also very important to increasing the visibility of newsletters. Sometimes designers make the newsletters too complicated to read or see and it becomes difficult for people to distinguish what it is. Strategically putting white space in a newsletter will help people to better understand what the newsletter is all about.

Mental Awareness

Being aware of your thoughts is the first actual step to proper self defense. Believe it or not most of what you think determines what will happen in an altercation with someone. This might be a fight between friends or it might be a more serious situation like defending yourself from a burglar or criminal. Your mind in every situation controls exactly what it is you do...obviously. But did you know that thinking negative thought during an altercation can actually prohibit you from and success in the situation? If you are thinking nothing but, "How am I going to make it out of this?" or "oh my God I might not live through this!" it is a high possibility that those thoughts could come true.

Please understand me when I say this, I don't expect you to be thinking about going to the amusement park while you're being robbed, let's be serious. But what you can do is say,"Everything is going to be Ok just stay calm." Saying that simple little phrase tells your subconscious to do everything it can in order to bring that into reality. This can actually be applied to everything in your life. I am not here to write about soul seeking, personal development but you get the picture.

The main lesson to take from this is simple; stay focused, stay positive. You might have pepper spray in your purse or pocket or you might have a stun gun or even a knife with you. These self defense weapons mean nothing if you're not calm enough to use them. Once again, you don't have to be in a Zen like state but you have to keep your mind on your goal and this is to stay alive and walk out of the situation OK. Check out a post called "Mental Affirmations." This post almost complements what you have read here so far, but with more details and steps.

In conclusion just make sure you keep yourself ahead of the game by using your head. Tell yourself that you will be OK and that all will turn out fine. You and only you control what happens in your life. Even certain outside factors can be changed by what you think and how you talk to yourself. Mental awareness is what separate survivors from victims. If you plan on living your life in happiness and freedom then keep telling yourself that you are happy and safe from harm. That is the only thing you can do to keep yourself ahead of the game.

Matthew Batcho is an entrepreneur that has been involved with start-up business for over 10 years. He currently owns a landscaping business and runs a small self defense business online. He enjoys writing, painting, and discovering new ways to build business.

Home Staging with Feng Shui

Bottom line: it doesn't really matter whether or not you believe that Feng Shui methods are important to home decorating. When you get ready to sell your home, you'll find that employing Feng Shui practices can add perceived value to your home in a buyer's mind. Feng Shui ideas just might help sell your home faster, and for more money. In case you're not familiar with the concept of Feng Shui, here are some tips for incorporating it into your house.

First, engage the senses of potential homebuyers in as many ways as possible. To engage the sense of sight, make sure your home offers lots of horizontal space. That means keeping the tops of counters, dressers, and shelves as clear as possible. To engage the sense of smell, use cinnamon or pine scents, which have been proven to be more effective than vanilla or floral scents. To engage the sense of sound, place a pleasantly gurgling fountain near the front entrance or have gentle music playing.

As is the case with all home sales, first impressions are important, and Feng Shui can come into play at the front door of your home. Keep it clean, turn on front porch lights if the viewing will be after dark, place a nice doormat in the entry, and have flowers or lush plants on either side of the entryway.

To bring moving energy into the house, begin getting your own stuff out of the house to make room for the new owner's stuff. It not only sets in motion a powerful energy, but it also gives you a head start on your own packing.

Since the kitchen is the most important room in the house, as far as most buyers are concerned, spend extra time making sure yours is friendly and exudes a feeling of health and prosperity. Keep counters immaculately clean, organize your pantry, and keep all wastebaskets out of sight.

If it's possible that potential buyers might catch sight of a bathroom when they first enter your home, it's critical that you always keep the bathroom door shut. Its also important that potential buyers never see a toilet until they actually open the door and expect to see one. When they do inspect the bathroom, it's also critical to make sure the toilet lid is down. Both of these are powerful Feng Shui techniques for creating positive energy impressions.

Again, it doesn't matter whether you're a Feng Shui enthusiast or not. Using Feng Shui concepts can add perceived value to your home, which can mean a short selling time and a higher sales price--both of which are always appreciated!

You Say Merliton, I Say Mirliton - A Merliton by Any Other Name Tastes Just As Sweet!

For those of you not living in either California, Florida, Louisiana or Latin America, you may not be familiar with a merliton. Perhaps the names, chayote, vegetable pear, mango squash, cho-cho, xuxu or christophene ring a bell. They all refer to this versatile gourd-like vegetable that is grown around the world and called by various names. Historically, it was a primary food of the Aztecs and Mayas.

What Exactly is a Merliton?

A merilton is an edible plant of the Curcurbitaceae (gourd) family along with melons, cucumbers and squash. It is grown on a vine. It looks like a light green large pear, similar in color to a Granny Smith apple. The inside is a lighter color with a soft large seed.

A merliton can be fixed in as many ways as a sweet potato. It can be stuffed, fried, bake, mashed, creamed, pickled and buttered. The filling makes a great custard pie. It can be eaten raw and served cold in salads. It makes a great tasting soup and merliton fritters are a popular substitute for pancakes.

Many say that merlitons can be substituted for any recipe requiring squash. But I would add, for any recipe calling for sweet potatoes as well.

Merlitons are a low calorie vegetable, only 40 calories per cup. They are also low in sodium and a good source of fiber. They are rich in amino acids and vitamin C.

How Does A Merliton Taste?

It tastes good! A merliton tastes similar to summer squash, but a little sweeter. The outside texture is a cross between a potato and a cucumber. The inside is more similar to an eggplant. I prefer it cooked, but many eat it raw or pickled.

A great low calorie snack is to cut into strips and boil. Marinate with low fat salad dressing in the refrigerator. The strips make a great snack when looking for something quick to munch on.

Where Do I Buy One and Why Are Merlitons So Great?

Although merlitons were native to Mexica and Central America, they are now grown over the world. They can be found in ethnic markets including Asian, Indian, Philippian, Caribbean, and Latin American. They may be found in your local "super" supermarket, but most likely are not called a merliton.

Merlitons are great because they taste so good and can be fixed so many different ways. But best of all most people have never heard of them. I live in Texas and for me they are my secret weapons. When I want to WOW my friends with my cooking prowess, I cook a dish with merlitons. My Cajun merliton and shrimp soup has my neighbors begging for more!

My name is Dianna Smith and I live in Texas with my husband and two daughters. My husband is from New Orleans. My in-laws lost most of their possessions due to hurricane Katrina. This included the family recipe book. So, I decided to create a website, Cooking New Orleans Style, where the family recipes could be viewed by all of our displaced friends and family.

Feng Shui Wealth and Well-Being

We all want to make the most of our western lifestyle. For many of us this means lots of stuff. We seem to buy and buy. Eventually we have so many possessions we have to pack them away. Many people are in a situation of what is called overflow. Another word for overflow is clutter. When there's too much clutter in our homes it looks untidy and disorganized. This will affect our mental and emotional wellbeing. The reason is quite easy to understand. The environment we live in is disordered and unbalances. We end up feeling exactly the same way.

Acquiring much more material goods than we actually need doesn't make any sense at all. We waste money on these items and they take up valuable space. More often than not it makes tidying and cleaning a lot more difficult. If this sounds like your home then consider Feng Shui. Wealth from this practice can be considered as material, psychological and emotional. Some call it good luck.

According to the very ancient Chinese culture your environment has a direct influence on you as an individual. Feng shui wealth and harmony will make your life a lot more enjoyable. If you are a person who finds it hard to be tidy and orderly using the principles of feng shui will be an excellent guide. You will know how to take control of the home you live in. But don't stop there. You can also use these ancient principles at work. Your state of mind will change completely. You will start to feel calmer and balanced. This is because your environment is controlled and balanced in order to create harmony through feng shui. Wealth is one of the benefits. It is believed feng shui attracts positive energy into your surroundings. Get your hands on 'Secrets of Feng Shui' and change your home and your life.

How to Forgive Someone

Weve all heard the saying, You have to forgive, but you dont have to forget. I wont refute that, but you have to agree that a lot of people use that excuse to never really forgive at all. Are you one of those people?

Lets rephrase it a little. You have to forgiveand you have to forget the anger, the pain, the anxiety, and everything else that comes with someone sinning against you. But you dont have to make yourself a target (even though Jesus did). Sound a little more difficult? This is really the Christian way of life, and its going to be difficult. No one promised you would enjoy it.

So well start with the forgiveness. This is where you have the most control, because its an act of will. You have to decide to forgive, and then do it. Heres a short list of what this involves:

No more daydreaming about your perpetrators pain and suffering.

Stop thinking about the what if outcomes, and accept what happened.

Start praying for the person. Not for their punishment, not for them to see the lightpray for their good and their soul. Say a simple Hail Mary, without meditating on the one youre praying for. Meditate on the words, and dedicate it to your perpetrator. Let God decide how to reward or punish them.

If you can do something nice for the person, do it without grumbling and without reminding them of what they did wrong.

Stop gossiping about them.

Every time you find yourself thinking about it, change the subject. Think about the starving kids in China, your financial problems, Baby Jesusanything.

Now that (believe it or not) is the easy part. Now it comes time to deal with the anger and pain. Sometimes its easy. But in cases of serious violation, or when someone hurts a loved one, the very idea sounds idiotic. And no, youll never completely let go, but you can completely try. And you can start by using some of the techniques listed above.

Youll probably have to take it further. Youll have to swallow those emotions. Bury them deep. Yes, Im going against what every therapist out there is preaching, but talking and sulking is no way to get over anything. Youve had your period of pity; its time to move on. When you feel the flame of anger building inside you, force it to the back of your mind, and let it die. Dont waste another second of your life stewing. Itll take practice, but every day is another chance.

Finally, theres that last part. This is where most of us have trouble. This is also where we have to weigh our duties, and choose whats most important. Here are a few questions to help you sort it out:

Does it involve someone under your protection? Im talking mainly to parents. Our children obviously come first, and were never obligated to put them in danger.

Does it involve a sexual violation? I dont have to go into this. If someone isnt treating your body like a Temple of Christ, then stay away from them.

Does it involve injury? The big question here is How much? A school boy shouldnt offer himself out to the wedgie bully, but a pop in the arm is usually more a matter of humiliation than personal injury. If your body is being harmed by someone, you have a right to stop thembut again, Christ didnt. Also, consider how likely the person is to harm you again. If it was a one-time event, you should let go. On a side note: Repeated domestic violence has several victims, especially children. And track records show that very few offenders only strike once. If youre trying to figure out whether or not to leave such a situation, stoop thinking and get out.

Does it involve personal property? Whos property? If youre raising a family, you cant risk everything and ignore their needs. But ask yourself if the amount stolen or damaged property is worth the hassle of never trusting someone again.

Does it involve your good name? Hunker down and forget about it. The truth will set you free. Lies hurt the liar more than anyone else. If its the truth, then just be more careful of what you saybut dont withhold something begrudgingly.

Why Do People Go To Church

What is a Psychic

The word psychic (pronounced /saikik/; from the Greek psychikos--of the soul, mental') refers to the ability to perceive things hidden from the normal senses through what is described as extra-sensory perception, or to those people said to have such abilities.

The truth of the matter is that everyone has extra sensory abilities or psychic-ness. It is what the common-or-garden term used these days is your 'gut feeling', intuition, sixth sense; that little voice in your head that tells you otherwise. It is the sense that tells you to avoid a certain place or person without any logical reason. Everything and everyone has a psychic ability that we either choose to use or ignore. It is just a matter of being aware of your own unique gift.

Being a psychic person in simple terms is the process of being aware and developing a greater heightened awareness of being aware. For some it might be a daunting task and for others is might be easier. This is one of the reasons that many people engage in the practice of meditation, practicing bringing the mind to the present moment, yoga or any activity that develops the habit of strengthening your awareness.

A person who is highly intuitive/psychic or possess a greater heightened sense of awareness is not necessarily living the life of Buddha or anything profound but an ordinary life with all its up and downs of the day-to-day trials and tribulations. It is like some people can wiggle their ears or raise one eyebrow and some people can tell you are going to call them before the phone rings. It can also be a difficult way of being without the help and understanding of others. Have you ever been told you are just too sensitive? Are you hypersensitive in crowds? Electronic gadgets drive you crazy sometimes? Or maybe you have dreams that actually come true? literally.

These are all symptoms of having a psychic sensitive awareness. Some consider it a wonderful gift on a good day and some days a great burden. It is a responsibility that is not carried lightly but with guidance and support by those of us who have been there (especially in the more difficult times) to help learn to manage these gifts, it can be a beautiful way of being.

So in my opinion, everyone is a psychic and everyone has the ability to master their gifts of the extrasensory ability, it is just a choice as to whether you choose to use it, follow it, have confidence in it or not.

In the next issue of PsychicsEmerging Newsletter we will explore different types of extra sensory/psychic abilities, what they mean, and for what they are used.

The Sacred Feminine in Western Religion

'God', or 'Divinity', however you use these terms, is endless, infinite, and timeless, and as such is inherently indefinable and unknowable.

But the Sacred Feminine aspect of the creation is the vehicle, the 'Vessel', through which the infinite Divine can be expressed in our finite world. And only the Sacred Feminine can lead the soul back to the Divine.

A defining characteristic of the Masculine is the need to think things through in a linear, step-by-step manner, to experience a reality that is limited and finite and therefore straightforward, controllable, and 'knowable'. A defining characteristic of the Feminine, on the other hand, is the ability to experience reality in a holistic, open-ended, all-at-once manner, to take in and accept limitlessness and infinity. Needless to say, we each have a share in both of these characteristic abilities, but the Sacred Feminine in the world (women) and within the individual (the heart) must introduce the Sacred Masculine to the unknowable reality of the Divine. In the sacred stories, for instance, it is the Celestial Aphrodite who must unbind perfected souls and release them into bliss. And this is why Miriam had to die first, before Aaron and Moses: the Shechinah must lead the way.

Another defining characteristic of the Masculine is that it expresses the Active force within the creation, and as such it is always involved in doing, fixing, making, and acting. The Feminine, on the other hand, is the Passive/Receptive force of creation. This quality of passivity has been given a very bad name in our frantically productive society, where it has been saddled with negative and destructive connotations of weakness and submission. But if the truth be told, passivity is the higher quality. Action is the emblem of the realm of Matter and Time: the Masculine 'does'. Passivity is the emblem of the realm of Spirit and Eternity: the Feminine 'is'. It is this ability to be passive, to 'be' without having to 'do', that allows the Sacred Feminine Vessel to receive pure, endless, unknowable Being, without having to limit it or define it through any agenda of her own, and then to bring it to birth as infinite abundance and love in the physical world.

In the Old Testament, the Sacred Feminine is represented by various characters, including Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, and Miriam, who nurture and protect the patriarchs and Moses. In the New Testament, She is represented by the Marys, who nurture and protect Jesus (who represents the Sacred Masculine). But the Feminine power in the scriptures is not some sweet gentle 'goddess', representing all the 'nice' qualities that are missing in men. She is the Shechinah, the 'Presence' of God in the Creation, the force that hovers over the Ark of the Covenant, the 'Mother of All Living' who pours forth all the forms and qualities in the infinite universe. She is Life, from the primordial Chaos, to Eve, to 'Rahab, the harlot of Jericho'. She is the Beauty of Rachel and the Wisdom of Leah. She is Miriam's prophetic power. She embodies the secret of the Red Cow, for she is the mystery of blood, sex, birth, and death. She is the Sea, the boundless power of the Unconscious. She is the Mother and the Whore and the Wife and the Destroyer.

In the Christian story, She first appears to Jesus in the guise of an abundance of women led by a triad of Power, Grace, and Joy, reuniting with the Sacred Masculine so that together they will be capable of completing the journey back to Divinity.

"Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene [which means 'High Tower'], from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna [which means 'Grace'], the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna [which means 'Joy'], and many others, who provided for them out of their resources." (Luke.8.1-3)

To say that Mary Magdalene had been 'cured of seven demons' does not mean, as has often been said, that she was a particularly egregious sinner. She was no more a sinner than you or I. But Mary Magdalene had been fully initiated. In scriptural symbolism, 'Seven' signifies complete achievement, and this means that every single level of Mary Magdalene had been purified and perfected. She is the archetype of the soul that drinks in the total experience of life on earth, who has the good sense and humility to ask for God's help (like the Samaritan woman), who pours forth love and attains complete forgiveness (like the woman with the alabaster jar), who completes all of the Great Work and has been healed at every level of her soul, and who will now remain the powerful ally and protectress of the Spirit right to the very end - Mary, unlike the other apostles, will still be present at the Cross. And apart from Jesus himself, there is no indication that anyone else in the New Testament achieves her level of initiation, with the single exception of her male-counterpart, Lazarus.

Was Mary Magdalene the secret wife of Jesus? Was she the 'vessel' of his semen and his children, the mother of a lost line of kings, and thus the authentic 'Holy Grail'? All of this is beside the point. Not because it is unimportant to return the Sacred Feminine to her rightful place in western civilization. On the contrary. It is urgent. But chasing after gossip, scandal, and conspiracy theories, is not the way to do it.

Socrates taught his pupils that only those things which help to perfect one's soul can be called 'moral' or 'good'. If we found a Marriage Certificate with both of their signatures buried in a desert cave, how would this discovery contribute anything to the perfection of one's soul? The search for this kind of 'proof' is fascinating and fun, but it is of no spiritual significance. It is merely a diversion. We should put aside the scientific demand for 'proof' and the academic fascination with textual criticism, and ask ourselves more important, human, and relevant questions: What are these stories trying to tell me? How can these words help me with my life? How can my struggle to unveil their inner meaning help my soul evolve? What are they telling me to do, and how can I do it?

The reason we must restore the Sacred Feminine to her full divine stature in our lives and culture is because without her all spiritual evolution is impossible! Without her all the ancient myths and holy scriptures are useless! We cannot follow Demeter and Persephone back up to Olympus, we cannot obey the Law of Moses, we cannot walk in Christ's footsteps, if we continue to misconstrue everything that is said about the perfect equality, the required harmony, and the absolute inter-dependence of 'Male' and 'Female' at every level of Creation. All of this is in the stories. Nothing is hidden. But the meaning of the words has to be penetrated and understood. As we have seen, only the Sacred Feminine, within the soul of a human being or the soul of a civilization, can receive the pure, endless, unknowable Being of God, without trying to limit or define it, and then bring it to birth as infinite abundance and love in this world. And only the Sacred Feminine, through pure noetic intuition, can reconnect us to that infinite, timeless, Divine Being, and lead us home.

The consequences of her degradation, a crime for which men and women are equally responsible, are constantly and painfully visible in the disintegration of compassion, decency, kindness, and human meaning, that we witness all around us.

Book Review - Mixed - My Life in Black and White

"I hate covert racism. I always hated guessing whether someone is being mean/rude/nervous because they hate my race or because they are having a bad day. As I got older, I noticed that covert racism is like depression: You know it when you feel it, but it's hard to explain to someone who has never experienced it. It's like a sixth sense that God has given people of color that white people don't believe in. We just know."

In her memoir "Mixed: My Life in Black and White" (2006), Angela Nissel writes of the struggles she faces while growing up biracial. Nissel's name may be familiar to fans of the NBC comedy series "Scrubs." She has been a staff writer for the show for four years and is now consulting producer. As a starving artist (a.k.a. freelance writer), Nissel sold some goods on eBay for extra cash. The winning bidder for one of those items was a television executive who had read her first book "The Broke Diaries" (2001), which was about her days as a broke college student. The eBay winner introduced Nissel to a television literary agent who sent copies of "The Broke Diaries" to shows hiring comedy writers. Nissel had numerous job offers, but chose "Scrubs."

Her knack for sarcastic, quick-witted humor that is a driving force in "Scrubs" is what makes "Mixed" a must read. When Nissel is in the fourth grade, two of her classmates, Jimmy and Michael, call her a zebra. (That isn't the humorous part.) Nissel's father finds out and goes to the boys' houses with Angela. Jimmy's parents scold their son. However, Michael's father slams the door in Angela's father's face. That father's dog has been using the Nissels' yard as a bathroom, so Angela's father concocts a hilarious scheme involving an Ex-Lax pill. Angela asks her father whether the Ex-Lax will hurt the dog. "'No, just Michael's father's carpets,'" her dad replies.

Later, though, Angela discovers that her father has been cheating on her mother, but even this situation is steeped in humor. "I already knew my parents were having problems and she suspected my father of cheating. (Note to parents: Trying to have cryptic conversations by spelling words out no longer works once your child is reading.) Then later, "Ever since the first argument about my father c-h-e-a-t-i-n-g with w-h-o-r-e-s, my mother had started working a lot...."

The thing about this book is that the comedic moments are also sad ones. And this is Nissel's strength: She makes you laugh, but she also makes you think. Comments from people about her looks teach her that there is "good" hair and an "ugly" nose. The features people consider pretty are from her white father.

She went to all-black schools, all-white schools, public, private, schools associated with different religions-yet she never fit in. She was never white enough or black enough, so she was the target of merciless teasing. "Being a mixed child, you get used to people staring at you," she writes. She immediately follows with humor: "I learned that rolling my eyes or sticking out my tongue was the quickest way to get people to avert their gazes." She learns that being biracial is no easier in the dating world. She notices that of six black male coworkers at a production company, "five had white wives and one was dating an Asian girl."

The book is filled with Nissel's struggles, but she doesn't want you to feel sorry for her; she is explaining how her experiences (good or bad) made her who she is. She makes you care about the people in her life, particularly her mother, who let her daughter change schools and religions-almost as often as she changed her clothes-in an attempt to find herself. Nissel doesn't censor herself-or anyone else-which makes for brilliant dialogue and unapologetic honesty.

Amish Country - A Great Place to Visit

The first Amish settlements were in Berks County Pennsylvania. The land there was highly suited to farming. During the French and Indian wars their homes were disturbed by raiders and many Amish found safe haven in Lancaster County, PA.

Disputes among the people on the interpretation of the Ordnung caused many families to leave the PA communities and settle in places like Iowa and Missouri. The Ordnung is the oral code on how an Amish person was to live and conduct themselves. Further Amish settlements would crop up around the heartland from European immigrants. Today Holmes County Ohio, Lancaster County Pa and Lagrange Indiana host the largest populations of Amish.

Population, land shortage and Ordnung issues have resulted in Amish settlements spreading into 25 states and Canada. The most recognized Amish are the Old Order Amish who have compromised the least with the world at large.

Many people refer to the Amish as Pennsylvania Dutch but they are actually of Swiss-German descent. Dutch came about by the misspelling of Deutsch, which is a word for the German language. This language is still spoken in many Old Order Amish communities. Amish communities in Pennsylvania are largest in Lancaster County with the oldest settlement in the United States being in the southeast. This is a beautiful county filled with covered bridges and old German architecture. The gorgeous Susquehanna River meanders through the landscape and under the many covered bridges. As far as the eye can see there are lush farmlands and quiet back roads beckoning the visitor with promises of peace and tranquility.

Visit the area's many museums and historical sites like the oldest Mennonite meetinghouse in the country, as well as the farm and hardware store in Witness, a Harrison Ford movie. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery and the local lore by traveling by bus, car, horse-drawn buggy or even a hot air balloon. The food is amazing and there are antiques, furniture, quilts and dozens of other Amish made articles to choose from.

Elkhart and Lagrange County are home to the Indiana Amish communities. You can learn a great deal about the Amish and Mennonite religion and culture by visiting the Menno-Hof, an information center.

Better yet, take a trip to Amish Acres Historic Farm and Heritage Resort. When you finally get to town, there are farmers markets and village shops for your shopping pleasure. Flea markets, auctions, theaters and restaurants are all a great part of any trip to Amish country. Here you can also take horse and buggy trips that will take you to Amish style inns and farmstead shops. The "Reason" and "Moral" Dimensions of the Human

(If you wish to obtain more benefit from this article, please read firstly our "Correct Understanding the Human" titled article.)

My precious brother,

I had talked about five dimensions of the human existence in my previous article.

"Substance", "Physiological" and "Psychological" dimensions are present also at the animals. But "reason" and "moral" dimensions belong to the human only. I want to emphasize the last two dimensions for the reason that these are the base of the human behaviors.

A human in the reason dimension

The human gets a "character" and "personality" with being taken over the management of the body by mind, in the fourth "reason" dimension. Because, the reason is a mechanism for "thinking", "analyzing and synthesizing", and "deciding". For this reason, this dimension is a dimension that the human behaves according to his self free demands and desires, with his self free volition and with his self free decisions. But, by reason of the fact that the divine education doesn't occur yet, the desires and ambitions of the ego dominate the behaviors of person, in this dimension. That means, person takes the base entirely his own demands and desires, his own volition, when he decides on any subject.

The "good" and "bad" in this dimension

As a result, in this dimension, those being suitable for the desires of the person are "good", but those being adverse to the desires of the person are "bad". For this reason, the person can not be rid of having a double standard. Because, while a thing and a situation is "good" for being suitable for his personal interests; at an other time, the same thing and situation is "bad" for being adverse to his personal interests.

An other characteristic of this dimension is to be fond of money, status and having. In this dimension, for the reason that the person bases on the demands and desires of his ego as main manager of his behaviors, everything satisfying this desires gets a big value in his eye. A big fondness arises in his heart for everything satisfying this demands and desires of his ego. This extreme love and fondness for the things such as money, status and having divinizes these things in their owner's eye. And makes him become merciless and hard-hearted against the other humans.

The boredom of the human in the fourth dimension never finish

The boredom and confusions of the human in this dimension never finish. Because, the human obeying to his ego, in the fourth dimension, consumes all the time of his life by trying to satisfy the interminable demands and desires of his ego. However, the needs of human are endless. The demands and desires emerging in the heart for these needs are also endless. Does it finish the troubles of the human who tries to satisfy his own every whim? For this reason, the main characteristics of this fourth dimension is the boredom, heart unrest, and precipitancy.

One of the most important characteristics of this dimension is haughtiness. Haughtiness means to see himself superior to other humans. This is an inherent result of being egocentric. Because, the ego changes the realities according to self's demands and desires. And it sees excellent itself over everybody and everything.

The human in the fourth dimension doesn't know also a true "love"

The human in this dimension, also, doesn't know a "love" in real meaning. Because, the "love" of him is only for his ego and it's demands and desires. For this reason, he loves everything and everybody satisfying his desires and giving the pleasure himself. But, he becomes instantly distant from everything and everybody giving a little trouble himself. He loves everybody fulfilling any desire of him, he hates everybody who doesn't fulfill his desire.

Therefore, the majority of humans are very "good" as long as you perform his demands. "The good and the bad of humans is understood when you have not fulfill his desires."

Briefly, the man in the fourth dimension is a human who is owner "personality", but egoist, hard-hearted, atrocious, troubled, unrestful and unloving. Although he tries to seem like a good human for the reason the behavior patterns coming from value judgments placed in society, there is always an egoism under these views. There is an artificiality and a spuriousness in these behaviors, always.

Everything changes with "the faith" in the moral dimension

Everything starts to change, when a person has accepted to be subject to the will of his God, believing Him. This instant is an instant that the human has took first step to the maturity. The fifth dimension starts here.

My dear brother,

The fifth "spiritual" or "moral" dimension of the human is a divine education process that its rules are put by God. The name of this education process is the religion. The religion is a mercy and beneficence of God. Unfortunately, only the believers to God and after death take advantage of this mercy and beneficence. This mercy is only for those giving themselves up to God with a contented heart. Most of humans are so engaged in the demands and desires of their ego that they are not fully aware of this mercy and beneficence of their Creator.

The most important reason of the deprivation from the mercy and beneficence of God is, doubtlessly, the arrogance of human. The haughtiness is the most important barricade in front of all the divine benefits. But, the worst of the haughtiness is that being against his God by human. It is such a foolish behavior to be conceited against his God by human, whereas he was created by Him, his all needs are provided by Him, and he is a weak creature who will be dead if he remains breathless a few minutes.

The results of being subject to the volition of God

If the human begins to be subject to the volition of his God by relinquishing his self free volition and his haughtiness, in self heart contentedness and believing Him, he goes into a spiritual ascension and maturation process.

The method of this spiritual ascension and maturation process is to remember always his god, Allah, and to do "riyazet" and "mucahede". "Riyazet" means not to do the things which ego desires (such as forbidden things), "mucahede" means to do the things which ego doesn't desire (such as worships and favors).

As long as this maturation process is completed by doing "riyazet" and "mucahede", the politeness and maturity of the human increases. He begins to be a "human" in a real sense of the word. The endless desires of the ego being present in his heart decreases little by little. The person is rid of his ego and egoism. The fondness for the money, status and havings in his heart finishs. The love of Allah who is the real deity and is owner the mercy and high favour, takes place in his heart, in the place of these fake deities.

If how much a person be sincere in his faith and be desirous in performing the worships for his God, this maturation process is completed so much quickly.

A new personality

When the love of Allah has settled to the heart by disappearing the other loves and passions, everything changes. The person has got an altruistic divine personality now, in place of the previous egoistic personality. I just compare this situation to this that one greedy caterpillar which devours everything becomes one elegant butterfly which carries fragrances from flower to flower. After being completed this maturation process, takes modesty the place of haughtiness, gentleness the place of coarseness, compassion the place of heartlessness, bashfulness the place of shamelessness, beneficence the place of grimness, love the place of hate. This "love" in fifth dimension differs from the "love" in fourth dimension. It is a true "love". It is not like the loves which be showed for wold benefits and then disappears when this benefit finished.

My dear brother,

The most important results being obtained in consequence of this process are those: A strong faith and a heart serenity depending on it. Being in submission. Marifetullah. "Marifetullah" means to know his God by the human. The most valuable knowledge for a human is to know his God, namely "marifetullah". The human has been created for this purpose. The religion is not a somniferous as the socialist mentality supposes. The religion means to be "a true human" by passing through the education of God. If a man doesn't pass through this education, in spite of to be an intelligent creature, he becomes a cruel, fiendish, merciless, shameless, contradictory, tightwad, egoist, unrighteous creature, who always uses his mental activity for viciousness. He sometimes is insomuch cruel that, even any animal doesn't make which he does.

The evilness can not be controlled in the atheist societies

The evilness can not be controlled in the societies being deprived of the religion. The society becomes full to overflowing with the humans who try to crush each other. Therefore, the religion is not a somniferous, but it is a perfection and maturity elixir for the human. There are always serenity and happiness at the societies which sincerely lives the religion. The perturbations and discomforts stalks at the societies which don't live the religion sincerely or they have suspended from the religion.

The human knows his self and his God owing to the religion. He becomes a saintly creature owning the heart serenity, morality and good behaviors, by means of the religion.

The khalif of Allah on the earth

By looking at his behavior, you can easily distinguish such a human who has raised to the fifth dimension by passing through a divine education. Because he always adjudges according to the laws of Allah on every subject, by considering the consent of God every time. He never deviates from justice even it is disadvantageous for himself. He says the good and usefulness when he speaks. He says the true when he says. He never betray when be trusted him for something. He doesn't squander anything. He is true to his word when he gives a promise. He never persecutes anybody. He doesn't despise nobody. He doesn't deem proper anything which he doesn't desire it for himself. A human always feels himself at ease and secure when he came near him. Because he knows that no evil emanates from him.

Briefly, a human in the fifth dimension is a human that he is a symbol of goodness, maturity and perfection, having a divine personality. He is the khalif of his God on the earth. He is a true human.

Be trusted to God.

8 Energy Saving Tips For Your Clothes Washer

Everyone likes to save money. Since your household appliances are some of the largest electricity consumers, this is a good place to start your savings quest. The following is a collection of tips about how to save electricity when using your electrical clothes washing machine.

1 Sort clothes.
This is something everyone has been telling you to do since the first time you did a washing. It is not only necessary, but also the single biggest mistake made by consumers who do not believe it to be advantageous. Consumers often rush to complete the laundry chores and consider sorting to be a time-consuming idea. By sorting into the proper groupings the water temperature required becomes automatic. There will be no guesswork involved. For instance, by washing all dark clothes together the normal hot water wash temperature can be lowered to warm. Make sorting easier by providing family with multiple hampers. Individual hampers not only eliminate mixing of clothes but also allow them to be stored until each particular load type is enough for a full load.

2 Place near water source.
Place the washing machine near the hot water tank. Substantial amounts of heat can be lost as the hot water travels between the tank and washing machine. If the distance between them is greater than ten feet insulation should be added to hot water pipe.

3 Outside walls.
If the hot water pipe is attached to an outside wall the heat will be radiated out through the wall. Pipes should not attach directly to outside walls. Can be corrected by adding wooden spacers between the wall and pipes to insulate from each other.

4 Water level.
For small loads lower the water level accordingly. But, dont lower water below half full even for very small loads. Too little water can result in clothes tangling and being damaged.

5 Dont overload.
Overloaded washing machines will consume more electricity as the motor strains to move the excess clothing. It also leads to problems associated with poor removal of the lint from the machine. Persons who overload waste energy because clothes often have to be rewashed.

6 Auto Fill.
If your washer has an auto fill feature consider its use. The machine will automatically fill to the proper level. It compensates for load size and will use less water. Auto temperature will mix the cold and hot water as it enters the machine.

7 Clean filter.
For those machines will an accessible water filter, clean them after every second load. Proper water flow will lower time required to obtain a clean wash. If excess lint builds up in the filter it can re-deposit back into the clothes. This will require the clothes to be rewashed.

8 Level machine.
Any washer that consistently goes out of balance is wasting energy. Restarting the washing machine is usually accompanied by it being refilled with water by the homeowner. This wastes both water and electrical energy. An out of balance load may leave the clothes damp at the end of the cycle. This is energy inefficient because the clothes will have to by spun again. Also, excess water left in clothes will lead to wasting energy because the clothes will require extra time in the clothes dryer.

The above are some of the most common suggestions associated with energy savings. When striving for energy efficiency during clothes washing, always be aware of anything that interrupts, lengthens, slows, or disturbs the natural cycle of the machine. Any of them can cause unnecessary electricity being consumed

Greenergy - Where Does it Come From?

Green energy, or greenergy, is a term used to describe all methods of creating energy that are environmentally friendly and non-polluting. Therefore may provide a solution to the ever-present problems of pollution and global warming. Scientists and entrepreneurs alike have developed many forms of green energy.

  • Wind Power - The conversion of wind energy into electricity by using wind turbines that turn as the wind blows.
  • Solar Power - The utilization of the radiant energy of the sun through solar panels that collect and convert the sun rays.
  • Hydropower - The use of moving water to turn giant turbines which in turn create electricity.
  • Anaerobic Digestion - The burning of "farts" from microorganisms after they digest biodegradable material to create electricity.
  • Geothermal Power - The generation of electricity by harnessing the heat stored beneath the earth's surface to turn turbines as it rises into the atmosphere.
  • Biomass Power - The burning of biomass material, such as dead plants and plant-like materials, to create energy. Biofuel is a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels.

Nuclear energy is arguably a form of green energy. The process of splitting atoms and harnessing the resulting energy is much cleaner than burning coal or oil. However, problems with disposing of nuclear waste lay claim that this method is neither efficient nor effective in cutting CO2 emissions.

Keep in mind, no form of energy creation is entirely impact-free. Even the manufacturing and installation of wind turbines creates CO2 emissions before the turbines can generate the first ampere of electricity.

Parabolic Trough

The term "Parabolic Trough Solar Field Technology" is quite a mouth full. But what does it actually mean?

This article will explain what parabolic trough solar field technology is and how this form of alternative energy works to provide solar energy on a broad scale.

Parabolic troughs are a solar energy collecting devices which are used to concentrate sunlight on a specific point.

To understand a little more about this you have to know that solar energy is split up into several different fields or methods.

1. Photovoltaic Solar Energy: this is where solar panels are used to convert sunlight directly into electricity.

2. Solar Water Heating: This is a method of heating up water through the use of solar energy, usually done through flat-plate collectors on the roof of a house. It is a very efficient and energy saving way of heating water even in colder climates.

3. Concentrated Solar Power: Concentrated solar power is created by focusing (or redirecting) direct sunlight onto a certain area, in order to heat liquids or gases, which are then used to generate electricity. Currently this last method is one of the cheapest ways to convert solar energy into electricity.

Concentrated Solar Power

Parabolic troughs belong to the last category I mentioned, concentrated solar power. It is one of the ways of redirecting sunlight and focusing it on a central point.

The focal point (where all the sunlight converges) will become extremely hot, hot enough to melt steel if large enough parabolic reflector is used.

To utilize the heat generated by the parabolic reflector, a tube is placed at the focal point and a liquid is pumped through the tube. Due to the amount of heat generated, the liquid inside the tube is rapidly heated and turned into steam.

Steam then travels through a piping system to a steam turbine, where it is used to generate electricity. And that is what concentrated solar power is in all its simplicity.

Several different methods of achieving the same result have been developed, all of which fall under the category of concentrated solar power technology. Another good example are solar towers.

Parabolic Trough Solar Energy Plants

A parabolic trough power plant consists of a solar field, a number of parabolic mirrors in the form of troughs alongside each other. There are many parallel rows of these solar collectors across the solar field (see picture).

A heat collection element, in the form of tubing placed at the focal point of the troughs, fluid is then pumped through the tubing and is heated as it passes along the sections of parabolic troughs.

The heated fluid is then converted to steam and lead to steam turbines which in turn convert it into electricity.

That's the basic setup of a parabolic trough energy plant.

Anna supports the use of solar energy for a cleaner environment and a better future. To learn more, visit her website on Solar Power and Alternative Energy.

So Many Benefits in Building a Green House

Energy and cost efficiency are two perks of building using green architecture and design. At first the cost of building green may seem steep compared to a standard home, but the savings on utility bills can compensate handsomely. In green house design, electricity is used more efficiently.

Alternative energy sources can be used to actually save money. Using wind turbines can be one way to create electricity in green homes. Solar panels are an additional way to power electricity in a green house. With the cost of gas and coal powered utilities soaring, an investment in green technologies is likely to offset or even eliminate dependency on these limited resources for those building a green house. Installation and materials are the only aspects of solar and wind power that cost the builder anything. Both abundant and constantly renewable, the resources of sunlight and wind are free! Building green houses with wind turbines and solar panels can be both environmentally friend and economical as sources of power.

Another design concept that can be used is the gray water system. Gray water systems are more efficient because they use water from one area of household and recycle it elsewhere in the dwelling. For instance, using a gray water system could allow green home residents to collect water used while showering for watering a garden or flushing toilets! Unnecessary water waste is decreased in recycling water throughout the home from day to day. Reducing the carbon footprint of a home and saving money on water utilities are two benefits afforded by using state of the art gray water system technologies.

Building materials used and design of the dwelling are also key factors to consider when building a green house. Recycled or salvaged materials are an option in building a green house. From insulation to roofing and even flooring, it is possible to use recycled or salvaged materials for nearly every surface in green house designs! Recycled and salvaged materials have the double benefit of being both more cost effective and in many cases, more durable than other kinds of building materials. Using locally salvaged building materials can reduce the carbon footprint of a home even more if they are locally obtained. Since it does not require as much energy to manufacture and transport locally salvaged building materials, less pollution is created building a green house.

Different kinds of architecture can be used in building a green house in order to regulate indoor temperatures. Design which increases exposure to sunlight and heat retention is possible with green architecture and would benefit those building in cold climates. In warmer climates, a comparable principle of design can be used in building a green house. In warm places, residents can minimize sun exposure and harness naturally cooler biomasses beneath the surface of the Earth. The ways to reduce carbon footprints while saving money are truly endless when building a green house!

Radiant Heat - New Construction

Radian heat has become very popular in today's new home construction in cold climates. Once again I'm going to share some of my experience with my own house and others that we have recently built for customers. Radiant heat offers both energy savings along with comforts for home owners.

There are many different types of radiant heat systems on the market today but I will only discuss one of them that I'm quite familiar with. The new homes that we build with radiant heat utilize one of three boiler types; high efficiency gas boiler by Weil McLain, direct vent oil boiler by Buderus, or a high efficiency gas on demand boiler by Rinnai. Each of these boiler systems provide a high efficiency option for our customers depending on their choice of fuel and preferences.

The system is quite simple, the basement slabs have PEX tubing looped throughout the slab and tied to the reinforcing steel. Each loop runs back to a manifold and hot water from the boiler is pumped through the tubing to heat up the slab and "radiate" throughout the space. The main floor of the house is heated by running rubber or PEX tubing between the joists and stapled to the bottom side of the floor sheathing. Each of these loops is again run to another manifold which allows warm water to be pumped through the tubes thus warming the floor and causing it to "radiate" heat to the floor above.

In my new house we even ran tubing to the second floor for each of the bathrooms so we have nice warm tile to stand on. Radiant works well with concrete slabs, tile floors and engineered wood floors. You should check with the manufacturer of any flooring material prior to installation to make sure it is compatible with radiant heat.

Radiant heat produces a much more even temperature and an incredible warm feeling on your feet. By producing the steady even temperature the system actually will use less energy trying to overcome the up and down swings of a traditional heating system. Many statistics suggest that radiant heat can be as much as 20% cheaper to run than traditional heat systems. On average my experience has shown that the radiant heat system will cost approximately 20% to 30% more to purchase and install. However, the comfort alone is well worth the price and over time it should easily pay for itself.

Wirsbo has some great information about radiant heat at their web site. If you're interested in more information about the details we typically use in our homes see my website at http://homeconstructionimprovement.blogspot.com

Why Your House Should Wear a Warm Scarf

Have you seen those action movies where the enemy can be seen moving around far ahead in the darkness through special night-vision goggles? Ever wonder how that works? Typically the goggles are measuring infra-red heat (or energy) leaving the body.

Now apply the same idea to your house with all its opening doors and windows. Also imagine those leaking air vents and hidden cracks. Do you think your house will show up with night-vision goggles?

Using high-end thermal imaging equipment; your house will light up like a rainbow of yellows, reds and greens with spots of white.

This looks pretty but it's bad news, these bright colours signify different degrees of heat leaving your house....every hour, every day. Your house is leaking money....every hour, every day.

Generally the older your house the bigger the problem.

Is it possible to build a house that keeps heat in 99% of the time? Pretty close it's called an igloo.

Those guys got it right as far as heat loss, a definite A1 building energy rating (BER). Plus it's a design that hasn't changed in hundreds of years. Of course it's not practical in Ireland....how would I get my Sony Bravia LCD TV through the door?

The good news is that there is plenty you can do today to reduce heat loss in your house or in other words increase your energy rating and keep money in your pockets through lower energy costs.

Plus many improvements can be done quite easily and quickly with instant results.

We have compiled a 10 - point plan that can help you save energy and money today. It's available now on our web site.

Focus on Green Homes - High Efficiency Windows

What do windows have to do with a green home? Windows are a big part of your green home, since most of the heat lost from your home is lost though the windows. A set of inefficient, leaky or badly installed windows can defeat any efforts at energy savings or conservation. How can we stop the money from flying out the window? In this 'Focus on Green Homes' edition, we explain how to keep the windows from allowing the heat out of your home.

Through new technological breakthroughs, techniques are now available to build attractive, but energy efficient windows that retain heat a lot better than the old way of building a window. First, energy efficient windows have two panes of glass instead of one. And, in addition, newer windows have had the air space between these two panes of glass filled with argon gas that dramatically slows the heat transfer through the glass panes.

Heat is also lost through the air space between the window frame and the window space in the wall. Most people have had the experience of feeling a draft from leaky windows and doors. This gap around the window frame should be filled with quality insulation to reduce the amount of heat escaping from the home. There are several ways to apply the insulation. One effective way is to fill this gap with expandable foam and then cover the nailing flange of the window with special tape to seal the gap completely.

By doing all these steps, you can greatly increase the energy efficiently of the traditional window. Usually windows cannot be eliminated or reduced in size due to building codes and builder's rules of thumb. Windows are pleasing to the eye and provide ventilation and safety features that are important to any home. Therefore, windows have to be made more efficient in order to make your home truly green.

When choosing windows for a green home it is a good idea to look at many window manufacturers and their window prices because the most expensive windows are not always the most efficient. Religious Fundamentalism Can Create Problems

Religious groups can easily justify their actions by using religious text to benefit and promote their beliefs. The Muslims can sling quotes out of the Quran to justify their treatment towards women as second-class or even third class citizens in society, often removing certain rights from them because they weren't born men.

Shouldn't these women be treated equally. This is where religious fundamentalism evolves into religious fanaticism.

Christians can often use the same tactics to justify their beliefs and Christianity. This list goes on and on and has created hardships in the past on some people in our civilizations and will continue to do so in the future. As long as people continue to turn a blind eye to evil religious and government leaders, atrocities will take place and some of them will even be supported by those who eventually will become accused are victims of their own wrongdoings.

Does anyone remember the Ku Klux Klan? If you live in the south eastern part of the United States, there is a very good chance that you have heard of them or even know someone who belongs to this organization. The Ku Klux Klan was responsible for hanging African Americans throughout the early 1900s to prove that the white race was superior to the race of black people. Their religious beliefs fueled them with righteousness.

If this going on anywhere in the world today, may be issues about abortion or gay marriage. It seems like an oxymoron, if we allow gay people to get married, we won't have to worry about the abortion issue.

Some Christians, but most Americans look at this as a shameful part of our American heritage. It's not something that most Americans would ever support today. I would like to point something out about the Ku Klux Klan, they started out as a Christian organization and made examples out of other white people who weren't conforming to their ideal Christian society.

There are stories of people that abused their wives and the Ku Klux Klan set them straight, one way or another. If it required beating the crap out of them or killing them, something needed to be done and they are morally obligated to perform the task as Christians. These people took their Christian beliefs to an extreme.

When are we as a country and the world going to start fighting religious fundamentalism at its core and stop the atrocities that are going on today, using religion to justify their wrongdoings.

Do it Yourself Solar Panels - A Brilliant & Affordable Energy Solution at Home!

Do it yourself solar panels are fast becoming very popular in many homes, especially the United States where the government is actively pushing for the use of renewable energy. The appeal of building your own solar panels lies in its extremely low cost. Better yet, you can potentially cut your energy bills by 80% or higher. But if you think you aren't cut out for DIY work (even a simple one at that!), don't be put off yet! Here' why.

Think about this...if you want to get solar panels installed professionally, you must be prepared to spend a minimum of $3,000. That's how much it would cost to engage your local contractor to install it for you. If you own a big house, you're probably looking at tens of thousands of dollars. If you ask me, that's still a wise investment, considering the savings you'll gain in the longer term. But the thing is, you're unlikely to recover the initial outlay in the first few years. That's probably far too long for most people, especially with the recession fears.

The good news is, with the government now strongly advocating the use of solar energy, we're now seeing many do-it-yourself instructional guides being designed for people with varying knowledge and expertise. Even for the common folks, it doesn't take rocket science to build your own do it yourself solar panels. You just need to put on your DIY hat, follow the instructions in the guides and you should be able to get your own solar panels up and running in a typical weekend. And if you take a little time to search for good deals, you can get the parts cheaply and the system set up for under $200.

Here's a word of advice...if you're choosing an instructional guide, go for one that also provides step-by-step videos. Nothing works better than seeing how it's actually done. These videos will really ease your learning curve.

Do you also know that the government will pay part of your costs to go green? Yes, you even get tax credits for powering your home using solar energy!

By building your own do it yourself solar panels, you'll not only significantly reduce your monthly energy expenses...you're doing our earth a lot of good too!

Want to build your own DIY solar panels but don't know where to start?

Fret not! Many people just like you have successfully built one on their own to DRASTICALLY cut their monthly electricity consumption. They are already shaving $1000s off their energy bills every year. If you need STEP-BY-STEP guidance in installing one, I have reviewed the Best Online Guides on DIY Solar Panels for your convenience. These highly recommended guides provide EASY-TO-FOLLOW instructions that will help you save money in no time.

New Houses Versus Older Homes - Which Uses Energy More Efficiently?

On the surface, this is a no brainer: newer houses that are built with the latest and greatest building materials, insulation, and appliances.

But here's the true hidden factor: the residents or homeowners of the house ultimately influence the amount of energy that is used. An energy savvy homeowner in an older house has a better chance at lower energy bills than the homeowner in a newer house who is careless and mistakenly thinks that simply having a newer house will lower energy bills by itself.

That said, what could possibly be in a new house that could potentially cause it to be less efficient than a home 20 years older?

First there's the possibility of an improperly sized HVAC system. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) contractors are trained to size and install a heating a cooling system at least equal to the needs of the house. The contractor inspects the home, makes his calculations, and orders the supplies. A cost is drawn up, and work begins. The ductwork is put in, the appliances installed and tested.

Much of the time, the contractors are completely correct in their sizing of the system. After all, they are professionals. However, if there is an addition, or if there is more to the house added after the HVAC system is installed, the system may now be undersized. What does an undersized HVAC system mean? If it has to condition a larger area at the same efficiency, the unit will run longer and thus use more energy.

Another gaffe can be placing the HVAC registers near windows and doors. This is especially prevalent in split level homes or newer homes with large bay or front facing windows. Often times there is no other place to put the register, so it goes in front of the window. As long as the window is new and covered (and insulated well) most of the time this shouldn't be a problem. But down the road, as the window insulation fails, this can be a major source of energy loss.

Another offender is placing registers too close to sliding glass doors that lead to a patio or outdoors. Often times, these doors are added after HVAC installation. The effects are obvious - when the doors are opened energy is forced out of the house at a very fast rate.

Newer homes also tend to have more exhaust fans than older homes. Exhaust fans are not like other standard fans that simply circulate air. Exhaust fans actively force or remove air from a space. In this case, that space is your home. They are essential in attics to prevent ice and pressure buildup, but exhaust fans in range hoods and lavatories (as well as in some dens, especially those with fireplaces) pose an energy risk.

Newer homes also pose a greater risk for insulation gaps. Insulation gaps, or insulation voids, are areas of the wall (most commonly) where insulation settles or is simply not installed. This may be done on purpose or accidentally. An example of "on purpose" insulation voids can be found around most recessed lighting fixtures. The reason is because these fixtures are not properly insulated units, so fiberglass insulation cannot come in contact with the unit. So, as much as a square foot or more of missing insulation will probably be present around such units. Many ceiling fan junction boxes have the same requirement. Insulation here, though, may be just "missed" because the walls are often a primary focus. Sometimes the installer may also miss insulation in a wall, especially near windows or doors or switches/outlets. This is because often times the insulation is not done at the same time the electrical work is done.

If the new house has an air conditioner, the placement of the air conditioner unit is important as well. Although most are insulated, if left out in the sun, it may have to work harder. HVAC contractors sometimes take this into account, and sometimes are tied to a location based on the location of the HVAC ducts. Luckily, you can counteract this by building a small open enclosure to protect the a/c unit.

Keep in mind when you are thinking about a brand new home that there is simply no history of energy bills for the house. So in effect you are flying blind. You can make educated guesses based on the energy star stickers, the area temperature, and your appliances (assuming insulation is to spec) but there is no real way to accurately predict future bills.

Also, many newer housing developments where homes are built are noticeably void of trees and other taller vegetation. Older, taller mature trees are cut down to make way for the homes, and in their place (sometimes) there are a couple of small, younger trees. Trees provide a natural wind break and provide shade. In the winter, when deciduous trees shed their leaves, they let sun through while still providing moderate wind protection. This is an effect 95% of people forget about when looking at the majesty of a brand new home.

Ultimately, here is the bottom line. Under most circumstances, newer homes have an immediate energy efficiency advantage over older homes. Ultimately it is the residents of the home that at least partially control the home's energy usage. Still, newer homes may have energy problems older homes may not have that you should be aware of. And we outlined those above.

Save Money on Air Conditioning Costs

Many people don't realize that their cooling system is one of the biggest energy guzzlers in their home (second only to their heating system, depending on where their live). If you have an old air conditioning system with a SEER rating of less than 8, it may be worthwhile to consider replacing it with a more energy efficient system. Generally speaking you should be able to recoup the cost in just a few years.

So what exactly is SEER? SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is a measure of the cooling efficiency of your air conditioner or heat pump. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the system is at converting electricity into cooling power.

Matching your AC unit size to your needs is important, too. An air conditioning unit that is too big for the room will work harder and cost you more.

It's also important to remember that because your AC unit can be such an energy guzzler reducing your AC bill helps more then just you and your checking account - it also helps the environment. When the average US household uses 9,000 killowatt hours a year any reduction in power usage helps the environment. Consider this - generating 9,000 killowatt hours of electricity generates as much pollution as driving 13,392 miles in a car.

Here are some more fast, free and easy ways to lower your air conditioning bill.

  • Close drapes on the sunny side of your house.
  • Close off rooms that you aren't using and the cooling ducts to those rooms.
  • Turn off lights when not in use - because lights produce heat they make your air conditioning system work harder (and cost more).
  • Turn off your computer and other home office equipment - because they generate heat as well.

If you can afford to invest a little money into your AC existing system you have a few more options. You can:

  • Install a programmable thermostat (preferably one that offers zone control)
  • Check and replace your filters regularly, a dirty filter can actually cost be costing you money each month.
  • Install aftermarket energy saving devices such as a Cool-N-Save(tm)

Remember because your AC unit has the potential to draw so much electricity by maintaining and optimizing your current system you can reap substantial financial benefits.

Sam Greyhawk is an energy efficiency evangelist who works for Cool-N-Save(tm), an Energy Star Partner, in Huntington Beach, California. The Cool-N-Save can save you up to 30% each month on your AC electric bill.
