Fake it 'Til You Make it Real

Every hear that expression? Know what it means? Very simply, it is a way of creating change in your life by pretending you already achieved a goal you had set for yourself.

The concept is clear in that if we act as if we already live that goal, then our thoughts, our behaviors, and our actions necessarily change to reflect that new outcome. For example, I used to admire people who smile all the time. I wished I could be like that. Then it occurred to me that I can because I can simply choose to be such a person and take the action of smiling LOTS---for no apparent reason. So I started smiling whenever I thought about it! While I am still new at this action, I do it often enough that people have remarked about how happy I appear to be all the time.

The thing is, just the act of smiling brings such great feelings and thoughts to me that I want to keep smiling! Why would anyone want to walk around with a frown? It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile! I personally prefer laugh lines to worry wrinkles!

We create every moment of our lives. Everything begins with a thought. The thought then becomes an action which creates a result which leads to another thought and the cycle continues. We choose what we think about consciously and unconsciously. When we fail to take responsibility for our thoughts and actions we wind up blaming others or complaining about how unfair life is in the "real" world. The truth is, it is never, ever, about the other person and always about us!

Last week I was in a very busy restaurant. Two tables opened up in my view. Two young women came to set those tables. The first one had an intense look and moved in quick jerky motions. She seemed to be stressed or unhappy. The other person had a smile and sense of calm. Her movements flowed as she set the table.

Both women worked at the same pace. One enjoyed her work while the other seemed to be working at work. When I paid my bill I commented to the young woman with the smile how delightful she was for she really lit up the room every time she came in. She said she couldn't help it, that she is always happy.

She chooses to be happy and her life flows. The other person chooses to be intense and her life appears, at least in the morning rush, to be really hard work, something to get through.

The words we use when talking to ourselves (and to others) powerfully impact us. The Little Voice used to tell me there are happy people and there are people who work at being happy. Well, no wonder I believed people were either born happy or not born happy.

I know I feel happy when I choose to feel and be happy. The more I remember to smile the more automatic it becomes. It gets easier every time.

We form bad habits, right? Why not choose to form good habits? We choose to do things over and over AND we choose NOT TO DO things over and over. It is those habits of "do not do" playing out of our awareness that keep us stuck.

Live consciously in every moment and watch your life change! After all, life is an adventure to savor in every moment. Enjoy the journey!
